The History and Prayers Resonate at “Daizenji”,
the National Treasure Known as the Grape Temple.

Daizenji Temple is an ancient temple of the Chisan school of Shingon Buddhism, boasting a history of about 1,300 years. It was founded in the Nara period by Gyoki and enshrines Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) as its principal deity. Among the many cultural treasures, “Budou Yakushi” stands out, carved by the monk Gyoki, who founded Daizenji Temple after a vision of the Medicine Buddha holding grapes.
Gyoki is said to have introduced grapes to this area, demonstrating a strong connection with grape cultivation.
The temple, surrounded by seasonal nature, attracts visitors and is well-known for its prayers for bountiful grape harvests.

Traditional Winemaking Since the Meiji Era

Lumière Winery, founded in 1885, is one of the oldest wineries in Japan. A variety of wines are produced using locally grown Yamanashi grapes, including Koshu, Muscat Bailey A, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their high-quality wines have received acclaim both domestically and internationally.
The Lumière Old Underground Fermentation Tank, built in 1901, was used to ferment wine using natural temperature control at that time. The tank still retains its original appearance and is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property by the Japanese government.

Wine made from the Koshu grape variety, registered with the OIV in 2010, has gained high acclaim worldwide for its delicate and light flavor, which pairs well with Japanese cuisine. ”Yamanashi” was designated as a GI (Geographical Indication) in 2013, and its grape-growing techniques and wine culture were recognized as a Japan Heritage in 2018 and a World Agricultural Heritage in 2022.
